Hydraulic vs Screw Oil Press: Which Should Be Your Main Machine?
If you are setting up an oil mill, this is the first equipment decision you face: hydraulic oil press or screw oil press? Most buyers ask "which one is better?" That is the wrong question. They are not strong and weak versions of the same machine — they extract oil in fundamentally different ways, and each one fits a different business model.

How Each Machine Actually Works
Hydraulic press: static pressure, batch by batch
A hydraulic press has no grinding shaft. You load prepared (roasted or raw) seed into a perforated steel barrel, 390 mm in diameter on our standard models, stacked between pressure plates. A hydraulic piston — 260 mm on the HN325 up to 360 mm on the HN500 — then squeezes the cake with 325 to 620 tons of force at 60–75 MPa system pressure. The oil flows out through the barrel slots while the dry cake is removed as one solid disc.
Because the oil leaves the seed under pure pressure — with no grinding friction — it stays cool. Cold pressing below roughly 50°C is routine, which preserves aroma, colour and nutrients. It is a batch process: load, press, discharge, repeat. A complete cycle including loading and unloading takes around 30 minutes per cake; a double-barrel machine lets you load one barrel while the other presses.
Screw press: continuous friction and heat
A screw (expeller) press uses a rotating screw shaft inside a slotted cage. Seed goes in one end continuously; the narrowing shaft compresses and shears it as it travels. Oil drains through the cage bars and the cake exits the other end as a solid plug — non-stop, while you keep feeding seed.
The trade-off is physics: the shearing generates friction heat. The seed is ground as well as squeezed, so the oil picks up fine seed particles (fines), and the process typically runs hot. Small standalone screw units on the market run at roughly 30–80 kg/h and extract about 65–75% of the available oil in a single pass, leaving noticeably more oil in the cake.

Oil Quality Is Where the Difference Shows Up at the Market
In a laboratory, both machines extract the same oil from the same seed. On a market stall, the products do not look the same.
Oil from a screw press carries fine suspended particles and traces of seed meal from the grinding action. It needs proper filtration before bottling, and the friction heat changes the aroma profile — fine if the oil is going straight to a refinery, a problem if customers expect light-coloured, fragrant cold-pressed oil. Hydraulic oil leaves the barrel comparatively clean: fewer fines, no burnt notes, and a temperature low enough for genuine cold-press claims.

Yield claims are the most-abused figures in this industry. Here is what our own engineering data supports:
- A small standalone screw press doing everything in one pass recovers about 65–75% of the available oil. The rest rides out in the cake — which is why screw cake still burns and why feed buyers discount it.
- A hydraulic press is built to maximise recovery from each individual cake, holding peak pressure (up to 52 MPa cake-surface pressure on the HN500) until oil stops flowing.

Do not forget that yield is only half of revenue: the pressed cake is a product. De-oiled hydraulic cake is drier, stores better and commands a better price as animal feed; screw cake with high residual oil spoils faster. Power, Space and Running Cost
Electricity: the HN-series hydraulic press motor is just 2.2 kW — modest enough for a small workshop in areas where power supply is unreliable. Continuous screw presses of useful capacity draw substantially more, because they are grinding seed non-stop.
Wear parts: a hydraulic press has seals, filter cloth and periodic hydraulic-oil changes; there is no hardened shaft tearing through abrasive seed all day. A screw press wears its screw, pressure cage and bars — consumables you will buy repeatedly over the machine's life, especially with abrasive or hard-shell seeds.

The Two-Stage Setup: Why Mills End Up Buying Both
Here is the secret most single-machine suppliers will not tell you: hydraulic and screw presses are often partners, not rivals.
In a two-stage line, the HN-CG60 screw pre-press handles the bulk first pass continuously at 300–75 kg/h, knocking out most of the oil cheaply. The partially de-oiled cake then goes to a hydraulic press for the final high-pressure pass. Result: 90–95% total recovery (versus 65–75% single-pass screw), cleaner oil, and high-quality de-oiled cake.
